Your brain on money stress 😣 (and how to fix it)

Pursuing true North

🌟 Hello Friends!

Let’s talk about something that often sneaks up on us—disorganized spending.

You know that feeling when you open your bank app and your stomach drops because you’re not quite sure what’s coming in, what’s going out, or where it all went? That’s money stress at its finest. And you’re not alone—this is one of the leading causes of financial overwhelm.

Here’s the interesting part: your brain is actually wired to crave order. When your finances are scattered—receipts stuffed in the car console, autopayments you forgot you set up, or swiping your card without tracking—it lights up the part of your brain that signals uncertainty and danger. Your amygdala (the brain’s alarm system) kicks in, and suddenly your body thinks you’re being chased by a bear, when really, it’s just your bank account!

That’s why money stress feels so physical. Your shoulders tense, your chest feels tight, and maybe you even get snappy with the people you love. It’s not just about numbers—it’s about how your brain and body process disorganization.

💡 Here’s the good news: You can calm both your mind and your money with a few small shifts.

Take a Breath – Literally. Deep breathing tells your brain, “Hey, we’re safe.” This helps quiet that fight-or-flight response so you can think clearly instead of panicking.

Name Where Your Money Goes – Even jotting down your top 5 spending categories on paper gives your brain a sense of order. Clarity reduces chaos.

Create One Simple System – Don’t overcomplicate it! Whether it’s a spending tracker app, a notebook by your coffee maker, or weekly “money dates” with yourself, find a rhythm that works for you.

Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection – Every little step toward organized spending is a big win. Your brain loves a reward—so give yourself a smile, a check mark, or even a happy dance when you take action.

Friend, you are not failing if you feel stressed—you’re human. Disorganized spending tricks your brain into feeling unsafe, but with awareness and small habits, you can flip that script.

Take a deep breath right now. You’ve got this. And I’m cheering for you as you bring peace into your money and your mind. 🌿💛

Cheering for you,
Jenny Cioto
