Pursuing true North
"Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm."
β Proverbs 13:20 (NIV)
Hey Friend,
I want to talk about something that doesn't come up enough in personal finance conversations - and it might be the most important factor in whether you actually reach your goals.
It's not your budget app. It's not your interest rate. It's your people.
Your crew matters more than you think.
Here's what I hear from clients more than almost anything else: they get excited - genuinely, finally, this is it excited - about their financial future. They find their True North. They know what they want their money to do. And then they go home for the holidays, or they get on a group text, or they have dinner with extended family... and somebody pours cold water all over it.
"Why are you being so cheap?" "You only live once - just put it on the card." "We've always done the family vacation. You're not going to be weird about money now, are you?"
And just like that, the guilt sets in.
Here's what I want you to hear today: People who pressure you into choices that aren't good for you are not on your team. They may love you. They may mean well. But in that moment? They are not fighting for you. They are fighting for their own comfort.
Real friends cheer for YOUR win.
Some people cheer for you. Others just cheer for what you can do for them.
A true battle buddy - the kind of friend who has your back in the foxhole - doesn't ask you to blow your budget so they feel less awkward about theirs. They ask, "How's it going? Are you on track? What do you need?" They celebrate when you pay off a card. They high-five you when you say no to the thing that would have set you back.
Those people exist. They might be rare, but they exist, and you need them.
So here's my challenge for you this week:
Take an honest look at your inner circle. Who in your life...
Cheers you on when you make a hard but right decision?
Holds you accountable without making you feel ashamed?
Respects your goals even when they don't fully understand them?
Points you toward better, not just toward easy?
Those are your people. Lean into them. And if that list feels short right now - that's okay. Building that kind of community is part of the journey.
If you're ready to stop going it alone and want someone truly in your corner, I'd love to be that for you. A Money Clarity Call is the perfect first step. No pressure, no judgment - just clarity and a cheerleader who's genuinely rooting for you.
P.S. The family vacation sounds fun until the credit card bill arrives in January. You're not being selfish for saying "not this year." You're being wise.
P.P.S. Forward this to your battle buddy - the one who gets it. They'll thank you.
