The #1 Question I Have Goten This Month! 🎉

Pursuing true North

Hello Friends,

A question I have received a lot is, "How do I start a budget?" If you have had this question, you're in the right place! Budgeting can initially seem intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. Think of it as a roadmap or a guide to achieving your financial goals, and we're here to help you every step of the way.

1. Know Your Why

First things first: Why do you want to start a budget? Whether it’s saving for a dream vacation, buying a home, paying off debt, or simply having a clearer picture of where your money goes, knowing your motivation will keep you on track.

2. Track Your Spending

Before you can plan where your money should go, you need to know where it’s currently going. For one month, keep a record of every single expense. Yes, even that daily coffee! Use a notebook, a spreadsheet, or a budgeting app—whatever works best for you.

3. Categorize and Analyze

Now that you have a month's worth of data categorize your expenses. Common categories include housing, groceries, dining out, entertainment, transportation, and savings. Analyze your spending habits. Are there areas where you can cut back?

4. Set Your Goals

Determine your financial goals. Are you aiming to save a certain amount each month? Pay off a credit card? Build an emergency fund? Having clear, achievable goals will help you create a budget that works for you.

5. Create Your Budget

It’s time to create your budget! Start with your income and then allocate funds to each expense category. Prioritize your needs (like rent and utilities) over wants (like dining out and entertainment). Don't forget to include savings and debt repayment as part of your budget.

6. Adjust and Adapt

A budget isn’t set in stone. Life happens, and sometimes expenses come up that you didn’t plan for. That’s okay! Adjust your budget as needed, and don’t be too hard on yourself if you slip up. The key is to keep going and stay mindful of your spending.

7. Review Regularly

At the end of each month, review your budget. Did you stick to it? Where did you overspend? Use this information to make adjustments for the next month. Over time, budgeting will become second nature.

Remember, budgeting is about creating a financial plan that works for you and brings you closer to your goals. It’s not about restricting yourself; it’s about empowering yourself with knowledge and control over your finances.

Happy Budgeting!

Cheering for you,

Jenny Cioto
