Pursuing true North

Friend, this is your gentle nudge not to ignore your taxes.

We have about one week left in most areas, which means now is the time to get them filed. If you have a 1099 job or run a business, make sure you remember all of your legal write-offs. That piece matters.

Here are a few things to think about this week:

• File on time, even if you cannot pay it all at once 💵
• Remember your legal write-offs if you are self-employed or an entrepreneur
• Pay attention to the pattern -do you usually owe or do you usually get a refund?
• The goal is to get it as close as possible each year, so there are fewer surprises
• If you are getting a refund, make a plan for it now
• Will you use it to pay off debt or buy something you truly need?
• If you owe taxes, that jumps to the front of the line -taxes are one debt that goes ahead of the debt snowball because owing the taxman is a special kind of bad

A refund is not just extra spending money. It is an opportunity. Decide ahead of time where it is going, so it helps your family move forward.

And if you owe, do not stick your head in the sand. Filing taxes is important, and tax debt is serious.

Handle it this week, friend. You will feel a whole lot better when it is done.
