Hello, dear friends! 🇺🇸
As we approach the 4th of July, I find myself reflecting deeply on what Independence Day means to me. As a veteran, daughter of a veteran, sister of a veteran, and wife of a veteran—yes, you read that right—this holiday holds a special place in my heart.
Last year, during this very celebration, I received a surprising complaint about a patriotic post from someone on this mailing list—let's call her Karen. The complaint took me aback for two reasons. First, because my love for this country is profound, is it a perfect country? No, but it's where I take pride in being a citizen. I consider myself blessed to have been born a US citizen born abroad.
Second, this same person had been a client a few months prior. We worked together, and she paid off $10k in debt, setting herself on a path to move where she wanted to go. She thanked me, saying I changed the trajectory of her life with the words, “For the first time in my life, I am not spinning my wheels. I'm finally moving forward because of your help.” Yet, she didn’t know I was a veteran and thought it was terrible of me to be patriotic.
Let me be clear: I don’t love America more than God, but I did swear to defend her, even at the risk of my own life. There were a few deployments where I thought my country might require that sacrifice, and I would do it all again without hesitation.
So, this holiday weekend, let’s all raise a glass—be it tea or a little something stronger (no judgment here!)—to those who defend our country and to all who have paved the way for the freedoms we hold dear. Even this newsletter is a testament to my right to free speech.
Be safe and blessed this holiday weekend. And remember, if you’re looking for a helping hand like Karen did—minus the complaints about my service—I'm here for you!
Cheering for you,
Jenny Cioto 🇺🇸
